Copies of Hamilton County obituaries published in the Chattanooga Times and Chattanooga Free Press for the years 1897 through 2014, may be obtained through the Hamilton County Genealogy Society.  The fee for this service is:

You can search the Chattanooga Public Library obituary database to locate available names and dates of publication. Then make your request online from this website.

We make every attempt to process your request as quickly as possible. Delivery times will vary according number of obituaries requested, method of delivery, availability, library hours, etc. Please allow at least seven (7) to ten (10) days to receive your request.

The library database is an index to obituaries in Chattanooga newspapers from 1897 to 2015. Deaths for the current year will not appear in the database until the following year. The index provides the name of the deceased, newspaper name, and date of the obituary.

Entries in the database prior to 1951 were made on a selective basis. If the obituary you request is not in the index we will search the newspaper only if an exact death date (month, day and year) is provided. If no obituary is located the fee will be retained for the search.

Tennessee State Death Certificates from the HCTGS

Copies  of  any Tennessee State death certificate, for the years 1908 - 1912 and 1914 - 1965, may be obtained through the HCTGS. Death certificates after 1965 must be requested from the Tennessee Department of Health Vital Records. The fee for our service is $8.00 each for a PRINT COPY by USPS First Class Mail or $6.00 each for a DIGITAL IMAGE by email. An exact year of death must be provided. If an exact year is not known, additional years may be searched for a fee of $5.00 per year. We will contact you by e-mail if additional searches are required. If we are unable to locate the death certificate your payment will be retained for the search. Requests may be made on-line or by mail.

Please provide as much information about the deceased as possible. The month and day of death, as well as birth date are not totally necessary, but may increase the accuracy of the search. However, we MUST have the exact year in which the person died unless additional searches are requested.

Copies of wills contained in the Hamilton or James County Will Books may be obtained from the Hamilton County Genealogy Society. The fee for this service is $6.00 per will for digital images delivered by email. Print copies by USPS First Class Mail are $7.00 for the first page and $1.50 for each additional page per will delivered by USPS First Class Mail.
