Parker, Barry W.  73, a Chattanooga native, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

Born May 30, 1945, to Julius and Betty Parker, Barry’s often recalled family trips to the Great Smoky Mountains, a summer backpacking through western Europe, and a stint on a kibbutz in Israel. Barry was a graduate of The McCallie School and Vanderbilt University.

Inspired by his father’s work and his own life experience, Barry embarked on a distinguished career in journalism. As a reporter for the United Press International, Barry chronicled important moments in the civil rights movement in the Deep South and covered the devastation of Hurricane Camille along the Gulf Coast.  Barry went on to write for The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, before returning to Chattanooga to cover notable local events for the News-Free Press.

Barry authored and published several books including The Tennesseans: A People Revisited, which received the Benjamin Franklin award for its depiction of the state’s history and residents. His other writings include the story of the Siskin brothers, a centennial book for The McCallie School, and a history of Neyland Stadium.

As accomplished as he was a writer, Barry was also an avid listener, often remembered by fellow journalists, friends and family for his easy laugh and persistent encouragement.  He was humble, gentle, and courageous beyond words.

While other chapters of his life included hiking the Appalachian Trail and adventuring across the globe, Barry found the most joy in the simple pleasures of a walk in nature, reading The New York Times on a quiet Sunday, or going to the playground with his grandchildren.

Barry was preceded in death by his mother and father, Betty and Julius Parker; and his sister, Eleanor Parker Kronenberg.

He is survived by his loving wife, Flossie Weill; brother, Steven (Hollee) Parker of Marietta, GA; sons, Jordan (Rebecca) Parker of Chattanooga and Adam (Carol) Parker of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Aaron and Lilah; stepsons, John (Julia) Shoaf of Nashville and Alex (Christine) Shoaf of Lexington, VA; nieces and nephews, Seth, Eleanor, Dauren, Samantha, and Mindy; as well as dear cousins, treasured friends, and loving neighbors.

The graveside service and burial will take place on Thursday, July 5th at 10:00 a.m. at Mizpah Cemetery, 301 Collins St., Chattanooga, TN 37403.  Rabbi Susan Tendler of B’nai Zion Congregation and Rabbi Craig Lewis of Mizpah Congregation will officiate.  Afterwards, the family will receive friends during a meal of consolation at Mizpah Congregation, 923 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403 at 11am.  A gathering of friends and family will be held on Thursday July 5th at 6:30pm at 901 Lindsay Event Center, located at the corner of Lindsay St and ML King Blvd at 901 Lindsay St Chattanooga, TN 37402.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nilesh Patel, Dr. Brooke Daniel, and Carol Ownby for their compassionate and expert care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The BRCA Foundation, The Kidney Foundation of the Greater Chattanooga Area, Inc., B’nai Zion Congregation, Mizpah Congregation or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

Pendergrass, Donald

BIRCHWOOD YOUTH, 19, DIES OF INJURY
Donald Pendergrass Was Hit by 2 x 4, April 4, Building School Play Scenery.  Donald Pendergrass, 19-year-old Birchwood High School senior, died in a local hospital Sunday night from a head injury received when a 2 x 4 fell as he helped build stage scenery at the school April 4 for the school play.
His father, Orvele Pendergrass, said the youth did not complain of the injury, received on Monday, until the following Friday morning when he said he had a headache upon rising.  The popular senior went to school that day and to the senior banquet that night.  Returning from the dinner he became ill, but later rallied and was not carried to the P. & S. Hospital in Cleveland until Saturday, his father said.
He remained in the hospital 12 days, during which his spine was punctured 10 times, the elder Pendergrass said.  Believed to be convalescing, he was allowed to return home and suffered no further attack until Sunday, when he was taken to the Cleveland hospital and later brought here.  He died about four hours after admission to Erlanger Hospital.  His father said the only evidence of the injury was a small knot on his son's head. The elder Pendergrass said his son was struck by a 2 x 4 which fell when a companion's hand slipped, releasing the heavy timber also being held by young Pendergrass. The youth was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in the community. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Misses Betty Jean and Barbara Ann Pendergrass. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at the East Chattanooga Baptist Church, with the Reverend J. N. Bull and Reverend Morros McClanahan officiating.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Priddy,  Br. Burk

ESQ. PRIDDY ENDS CAREER

SALE CREEK MAGISTRATE FALLS VICTIM OF SMALLPOX PROMINENT MANY YEARS AS DOCTOR AND POLITICIAN MEMBER OF COUNTY COURT FROM ELEVENTH DISTRICT UNTIL 1906, AND ELECTED FROM NEW SEVENTH IN FALL OF 1912

Esquire Burk Priddy representative of the Seventh civil district of the county court, died yesterday of smallpox at his home in Sale Creek.  He was about 70 years of age and had been active as a physician and a politician in this county for a long time. Dr. Priddy was a victim of his own opinion in relation to the vaccination theory in prevention of smallpox, having always adhered to the belief that vaccination was of no moment and depending upon other preventive measures both as to himself and for recommendation to others.  Recently he was in the midst of a fight in his hometown on this subject and while the disease was becoming epidemic in his community, he himself was stricken.  From the beginning his was a serious case, having what doctors called hemorrhage Ous smallpox.  Last week the county health authorities visited his town and pronounced Dr. Priddy's case hopeless.  Death was delayed much beyond the time predicted. Surviving the deceased esquire are his wife Miss Tolley (sic), Dr. John Priddy of California, James B. Priddy, Daniel W. Priddy, Mrs. John Shelton, and Mrs. Thomas Roark of Sale Creek; Jesse Priddy, of Chattanooga, Mrs. Mack Roark and Mrs. John Clinghan, of Meigs County.  No definite announcement was made last night regarding the funeral, it is possibly taking place this morning from the residence.  Because of the nature of the malady that took away this well-known citizen of the northern end of the county, there will be no public service, it was announced. Esquire Priddy has been a resident of Hamilton County most of the time since he was born.  Years ago, he was an active practitioner of medicine, enjoying a widespread patronage in the region of Sale Creek, Coulterville, and Retro.  It is said he was an unusually successful physician until e practically abandoned the profession following an unpleasant experience as a pension examiner during the period when Judge Key was on the federal bench.  In 1900 he was elected to the county court from the old Eleventh district, which in the days of the large county court comprised but a small territory surrounding Sale Creek.  His colleague was Esquire A. H. Morgan, but recently deceased.  During his six years that ended in 1906, Esquire Priddy was generally aligned with the late Esquire H. J. Springfield and was frequently engaged in the hottest of the fights of that period.  He was always diligent of speech and his gift was employed to advantage on numerous occasions when factionalism in the court waxed hot.  He was regarded as always loyal to his district and secured every public improvement possible at the hands of the court.  Throughout his career he was popular with his neighbors, nearly all of whom believed in him and had respect for his ability to secure practical results.

When the county was redistricted by the legislature of 1905 the old Eleventh district was eliminated and the territory thrown into the new Third.  He and Esquire Morgan were succeeded by Esquires H. R. Caulkins and Henry Seybert.  The legislature of 1911 again divided the territory, creating the new Seventh district.  Elected to represent the new district until the next regular election to select magistrates were Esquires List and McGill.  They served until the election of 1912 when Esquire Priddy again became a candidate and was elected over a field of five candidates.  With him was elected Esquire Vandergriff.  This district comprises the precincts of Retro and Sale Creek.  He had served less than two years of his new term when he died.  He was a republican to politics.

W. J. Springfield, county register, who was doubtless Esq. Priddy's closest personal friend made this comment on the life and characteristics of the deceased last night: "Squire Priddy was a most sincere and true friend at all times to the common people and a man who loved the people of his community.  His last effort, which was successful, was to secure an appropriation to rebuild the New Providence school in his district.  Only recently he secured a workhouse camp for Sale Creek, after trying for more than a year.  He died before the forces, which will be at work there Monday had reached the camp.  In my judgment no man of all that territory would be missed more that Dr. Priddy will be both as a physician and a public official."

Reed, William R.

REED - Wm. R. Reed, of Marshall, Mo., departed this life Thursday, August 27th, 1896, at his daughter's, Mrs. Robert Ransberger, near Salt Springs. He was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee, Sept 7, 1840 where he lived until 1869, when he came to Cass County; then in 1886 he moved to Saline County, where he resided until his death. Rev. Huggins of Marshall, pastor of the M. E. church, South, conducted the funeral services. His remains were buried in the Salt Springs cemetery. For a number of years he suffered much from the disease, consumption, but God's grace was sufficient for him. But now he has his release from the toils and pains on earth and has mingled with the clouds of witnesses to await the arrival of those who prove faithful until death. What a life of toil, care and sacrifice he has in the past experienced! He leaves many relatives and friends, but we have the consolation that our loss is heavenly gain. He was highly respected by all who knew him, and the death of such a noble citizen is properly regarded as a public calamity and will be deeply mourned, but it comes with crushing affect to the hearts of the devoted wife, children and grandchildren.

Farewell, dear uncle, the summer has passed and with it you have passed over the line which separates the mortal from the immortal -- the temporal from the eternal. Sleep on the old and heavy hand of death has stilled thy gentle breast, no rude sound of this stormy land shall mar thy peaceful rest.  T____ Miller

Note from submitter: He was the son of James Landrum Reed and Cynthia Ann McRee, who are both buried at Wallace/McRee Cemetery on Hixson Road near Presbyterian Cemetery. James Landrum Reed was my 3rd great grandfather. Cynthia Ann McRee died shortly after the birth of William Robert Reed and James then married my 3rd great grandmother, Elizabeth Jane McRee, his deceased wife's sister.
I don't know the name of the newspaper that published this obituary, I purchased it from the Cass County, Missouri Historical Society---------------. He is apparently buried in Salt Springs, Missouri.

Reed, Rev. James Landrum

We have recently learned of the death of the Rev. James L. Reed, one of the oldest and best ministers of our Church, an old friend, a correspondent of the Christian Observer, and a man greatly beloved especially in the Synode of Alabama and Tennessee. Though he died two or three months ago, by some strange oversight no notice of his death so far as we know has been published in any of our Church papers. A native of Tennessee, Mr. Reed was educated in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and ordained to the work of the ministry in 1853. For more than a half a century his life was spared to preach the gospel he loved to teach through the religious press. Some fifteen years ago his book, the “Mode of Scriptural Baptism Demonstrated to be Sprinkling,” was published by the Presbyterian Committee of Publication. He was an ardent friend of the temperance cause and the author of several pamphlets and numerous newspaper articles on that subject. He came from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church into the Southern Presbyterian Church about forty years ago, and until the infirmities of age interfered with his ministerial work, was in charge of churches in Alabama. The Rev. Richard C. Red, D.D., professor in Columbia Theological Seminary, is an able and useful son of an honored father.
