Gibson, Louise Hixson

Mrs. Gibson dies at the age of 96

Widow of a Confederate Veteran – Funeral Will Be Monday in Hixson

Mrs. Louise Hixson Gibson, 96, one of the few surviving widows of Confederate veterans, died Saturday morning at her residence, 1513 East 16th St., following an extended illness. Mrs. Gibson was born March 20, 1864, the daughter of Houston and Nancy Barker Hixson. Her grandfather, Ephriam Hixson, became the first settler in the town that now bears his name only 24 years before her birth. A veteran of the War of 1812, Mrs. Gibson’s grandfather obtained a land grant when his former commander, Andrew Jackson, became the seventh president of the United States. The grant includes the area where Hixson now stands.

On Oct. 15, 1889, she was married to the late Jeremiah Gibson, a native of North Carolina and 20 years her senior. He was fighting with a North Carolina infantry regiment in the northern Virginia campaign when she was born. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Gibson moved his bride to a plot of land then considered the “country” insofar as Chattanooga was concerned. That was 73 years ago. It was swallowed up by the expansion of Chattanooga years ago. But the Gibson family continued to live there through the years. Mrs. Gibson’s death came in the same house she moved into as a bride. None of the family acreage around it has been developed.

For many years Mr. Gibson was connected with the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway Co. He also was a member for many years of the Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp of the United Confederate Veterans. Mrs. Gibson was the oldest member of the Hixson Methodist Church. Her parents had worshiped in that church before she became a member. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Hixson Methodist Church with its pastor, the Rev. Perry T. Rule, officiating. Burial will be in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens. Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Nota Gibson Divine; a granddaughter, Mrs. Annie Divine Lambdin; two great-grandchildren, Robert and Frances Lambdin, all of Chattanooga.

The body was moved to the National Funeral Home, West Chapel, to remain until the funeral.

Pallbearers will be C. K. Sisco, Henry Hobday, Herman Pursley, Raymond Davis, Charles Lawson and Curtin Hixson.

The Chattanooga Times, Sunday, September 18, 1960.

Grant, Mrs. Elizabeth

Woman Killed When Car Plunges Down Mountain Wauhatchie Pike Scene of Tragedy—Officer’s Wife Victim Grim death was at the steering wheel of an automobile in which Mrs. Elizabeth Grant, her young son, J. B. Padgett and Ralph Long were returning to the city early Monday night from Lookout Lake.
About 200 yards east of the overhead bridge the machine plunged over a steep embankment on the side of the new Wauhatchie Pike and hurtled downward for a distance of about twenty five feet.
Mrs. Grant, the wife of Lieut. Howard R. Grant, now in France with the Sixth Infantry, was dead when rescuers removed her body from the wreckage. Her son narrowly escaped from the clutches of the grim reaper, but Long, who was driving the car, came out of the accident without injury.
An automobile driven by J. F. Thomas brought the mother and son to the city. Mrs. Grant’s body was taken in charge by Wann and Son and prepared for burial. The boy is at Newell’s infirmary, with a bad scalp wound, a lacerated arm and other injured. While he is suffering a great deal, his condition is not regarded as serious, and unless complications set in he will recover. His mother’s skull was fractured and her body badly bruised. Her neck and jaw were broken.
A charge of manslaughter docketed against Long on the police blotter, was dismissed Tuesday morning in police court, F. C. Gilliland, formerly a foreman at the O. B. Andrews Box Factory, driver of the other machine figuring in the accident on the pike, was also ordered to appear in court. He too, was allowed to go his way, as the testimony tended to show that the accident was unavoidable. Mr. Gilliland was one of the first persons to reach the wrecked automobile of Mrs. Grant. He helped to remove her body and rescue the son. His contention was that the machine driven by Long struck the rear hub and fender of his car. The hub and fender showed that Gilliland’s care had been hit a solid blow. The Gillilands and some friends were en route to Lookout Lake at the time of the accident. According to Long’s story he was hugging the right side of the road. He claimed that the machine of Gilliland struck the left front wheel of his car, jarring the steering wheel out of his (Long’s) hand and before he could get the car under control it was on the edge of the hill.
Before her marriage to Lieu. Grant a short time ago, the accident victim was Mrs. Elizabeth Padgett. Her husband, Warren Padgett, for several years a traffic patrolman and later a deputy sheriff, died some time ago. Her maiden name was Miss Bessie Thrower.

Gray, David Henry "Red"

David Henry “Red” Gray, a recognized authority on the history of  Chattanooga, Hamilton County, and Rhea County, died Tuesday in an Oakridge, Tenn., hospital.  He was 72. A native and longtime resident of Hamilton County, Mr. Gray had lived in Coulterville, Sale Creek and Graysville, Tenn.

He attended school at Bakewell and went to the old Soddy High School, graduating in 1933 as class valedictorian.  Mr. Gray then attended Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., and studied business at McKenzie College in Chattanooga. In 1942 he enlisted in the U. S. Army, beginning his service with the rank of warrant officer.  His military career included service with the 5th Army in Casablanca, Algiers, Naples and parts of Austria.  Shortly after the war ended, he was given considerable authority regarding the operations of Steyr-Daimler-Puch Werke, an automobile factory in Styer, Austria, and traveled widely through Europe. Upon his return home in 1947, he resumed an association with Security Mills in Knoxville, accepting the post of auditor there in 1951.  His work took him through East Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. In 1957 he became manager of the Park Oil Co. in Maryville, Tenn., where he remained until his retirement in 1960.  After retiring, he farmed and began an intensive study of the people and history of Hamilton and Rhea counties.  He was very active in the collection and preservation of early records.

The Chattanooga Museum of Regional History in 1979 received a gift from Mr. Gray of some 5,000 items comprising a collection of early farm equipment, household furnishings, auto parts, bottles, military items and Chattanooga industrial products.  Most of these items were from this area and were collected by Mr. Gray over a 40-year period.  Recently, he donated a similar collection to the Oak Ridge (Tenn.) Children’s Museum. He had donated 460 acres of property in Coulterville to the Audubon Society.  The property was named the David Gray Sanctuary, now Audubon Mountain.

In 1982, he helped to found the Gray Cemetery Co., recently revitalized for the purpose of maintaining certain cemeteries in Hamilton County. A philanthropist, he had given direct financial assistance to numerous students over the years for studies at the high school and college levels.

Hamby, Luther

Luther Hamby, 65, who served as a member of the Hamilton County quarterly court from 1928 until 1941, died yesterday at his home in Ooltewah from a heart ailment. The former justice of the peace had been in failing health for the past three years.  Friday he was too ill to report for work and went to bed.  The end came yesterday morning as the former justice of the peace attempted to sit up on the side of his bed and drink a glass of water. At his death Hamby was an employee of the William L. Bork Memorial hospital. He had been working at the hospital for several weeks and prior to that service he was a night guard at the Silverdale (ink spot over last part of name) Workhouse. A native of Ooltewah, Mr. Hamby was born March 11, 1880.  In his early manhood the former squire operated a farm in the Ooltewah area.  About 30 years ago he quit the farming business and opened a grocery in Ooltewah. He remained in the mercantile business for some 15 years. A Republican, Mr. Hamby has taken an active interest in local politics for many years.  At first, he was active in the politics of what formerly was James County.  And when James County was annexed to Hamilton County, he then took an interest in Hamilton County politics.  In 1928 he made his first race for a Hamilton County office.  The late W. O. Watts resigned as justice of the peace from what was then the Fourth civil district and Hamby became a
candidate to succeed him.  He defeated the Democratic nominee, A. K. Poe, and became a member of the Hamilton County quarterly court.  He was
re-elected for a full six-year term in 1930 and re-elected in 1936.  For most of his career in the county court Mr. Hamby supported the administration of former County Judge Will Cummings.  But in 1939 he joined five other members of the court to rebel against the Cummings administration and voted to elect Marshall Clark as superintendent of the school system over the then incumbent, forer Supt. Arthur L. Rankin. The Ooltewah squire remained in the "rebel" ranks of the court after that time and voted with a group that styled itself as the "Big Six" consistently until his political fortunes turned in the race for seats in the Tennessee
general assembly of 1941 from Hamilton County.  The issue in that campaign was the abolition of the justice of the peace system of government, as well as courts, and the substitution there for of the County Council and the general sessions court.  With the enactment of that legislation Hamby and his associates lost their political hold in the county.  Another bill, the redistricting act, was passed also in the 1941 session and that law abolished Hamby's district--the Fourth-and therefore his office. Since passing from the political scene in the county court with the 1941 enactments Mr. Hamby has lived rather quietly at his Ooltewah home but had been employed by the county for the past few years. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Ooltewah Baptist Church with the Revs. Fred Johnson and J. B. Tallent officiating. Active pallbearers will be A. C. Newton, Gene _____(ink spot), Bill Hall, Ed Rice, Arthur ______(ink spot), and George Wolfe.  Honorary pallbearers will be the member of the Ooltewah Men's Sunday School class. Mr. Hamby was a member and a deacon of the Ooltewah Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge 741.  The Masons will have charge of ceremonies at the gravesite.  Interment will be in the Sylar Cemetery.
Surviving the former justice of the peace are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Auburn of Ooltewah, four sons, Cpl. T. G. Hamby, who is with the army in Italy; Hoyt Hamby, who is with the army in China; J. E. Hamby of Tyner and Gus D. Hamby of Atlanta, Ga; three grandchildren, Jimmie Lou Auburn,
Mary Ann Hamby and John L. Hamby.

Hardin, Enoch K.

Enoch Hardin, 96, dies at his home

Lived to Be Last Veteran of Civil War in County

Enoch K. Harding, 96, colorful character of the Grasshopper section, who, as a lad of 15 joined the Union Army and served in the Civil War during the last two years, died yesterday at his home in Birchwood. The deceased, who was noted as a gunsmith, was said to have lived to become the last veteran of the Civil War in Hamilton County. A one-time resident of Pikeville, Tenn., he was one of Tennessee’s most famous old-time gunmakers. Among the guns made by him was “Long Tom,” which was long a treasured possession of the late Walter Cline, a former Chattanooga photographer.

He manufactured hundreds of rifles, many of which were constructed half a century or more ago. His guns were greatly in demand in their time because of the excellent material used in them and the correctness of the sight placements. Walter Cline captured first prize with “Long Tom” at a Rod and Gun Club shooting match in 1928. In addition to guns, Hardin made fiddles which he carved with a jackknife from cedarwood. When the deceased was visited by an Evening Times reporter Sept. 18, 1941, he was described by his oldest son, W. M. (Bill) Hardin, with whom he lived, as having spent most of his days in the Grasshopper section, around Pikeville and around Daisy. The son, who was then in his 70s, said he calculated his father was 97 on June 25, 1941, “from his birth date in my granddaddy’s old bible.” His eyesight and hearing were then fairly good.

He is survived by two sons, Bill Hardin and John Hardin, both of Birchwood: seven daughters, Mrs. Lottie Phillips, East Chattanooga; Mrs. Lucy Eldridge, Alton Park; Mrs. Mattie Posey, East Lake; Mrs. Nancy Goins, East Chattanooga; Mrs. Jennie Gann, East Chattanooga; Mrs. Julie Davis, Highland Park, and Mrs. Hester Gan, Birchwood; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Grasshopper Holiness Church Saturday at 10 a. m., the Rev. Jimmie DeFriese of Birchwood officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Hickey, Dr. Homer David

Dr. Homer David Hickey, who as a physician, civic leader, and outdoors man made countless contributions to the enhancement of this city's quality of life, died December 29, 1988, in a Chattanooga hospital. Dr. Hickey was the founding president of the Brainerd Kiwanis Club and founder of the Brainerd Clinic on Brainerd Road, which he established in 1948 and operated until his retirement in 1980.  The clinic was the capstone of a medical career here that spanned nearly 50 years from 1934, with the exception of a four year tour of duty as a medical officer in General George Patton's Third Army in Europe during World War II.

Born in Cherokee County, N.C., Dr. Hickey and his parents, the late William Harrison and Laura Shearer Hickey, moved to Chattanooga when he was a young boy.  He graduated from Central High School in 1924 and attended Berea College in Berea, Ky., before going on to graduate from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis. Upon receiving his M.D. degree in 1932, he returned to St. Joseph, MO, to serve an internship and then to Wayne County Hospital in Detroit, Mich., to serve a surgical residency.

Dr. Hickey began practicing in East Chattanooga in 1934 and joined Dr. J. Hamilton Taylor in practice at the Medical Arts Building. His wartime dream of building a clinic took shape in the spring of 1946 when he began construction on the Brainerd Clinic.  In addition to his busy clinical practice, he also served on the staffs of Erlanger, Memorial and Tri-County hospitals and was an active member of local, state, regional, and national medical associations. Dr. Hickey was charter and lifetime member of Brainerd Kiwanis club, which honored him in 1982 by endowing the $50,000 H. David Hickey Surgical Research Grant of the Chattanooga Surgical Foundation. Funds from this grant are awarded to deserving area surgeons for research and development of new surgical methods.  He was named the Kiwanis Club's Distinguished Citizen of Chattanooga in 1981. An active member of First Centenary United Methodist Church, Dr. Hickey had served on the church's administrative board and was a member of the Foster-Martin Sunday school class.  He was also a member and past president of the Wolftever Fishing Club.

Dr. Hickey was married to the former Marguerite Bacon, with whom he celebrated a 50th anniversary this past March 1 [1988].  Mrs. Hickey is well-known as a regional historian and energetic volunteer in women's civic efforts. Survivors also include his son, Dr. H. David Hickey, a urologist in Memphis; two grandchildren, Kimberley Curlette Hickey and Jon Paul Dietrich Hickey, Memphis; brother William T. Hickey, Chattanooga; sister, Roxie Hickey Suit, Miami, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Hunt, Mrs. Levinna M.

The funeral service for Mrs. Levinna M. Hunt was held in the First Methodist Church yesterday morning at 11 o’clock, conducted by Dr. H.E. Murkett, her pastor, and Dr. Alto A. Brown, president of the University of Chattanooga.  Mrs. Hunt was 93 years of age and the oldest member of the First Methodist Church. In the year 1855 she was united in marriage to Alexander Hunt, in Brie County, New York, and removed with him to Iowa, where they lived for fifteen years.  They returned to New York for a brief time and then came to this city.  Mrs. Hunt has resided on Lookout Mountain for fifty years.  during the last seven years she has been tenderly cared for in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Nolan. Mrs. Hunt lived a long, useful life, endearing herself to many people in the city.  When yellow fever drove many of the inhabitants from the city, she turned her home into a house of refuge and took as many as possible to reside with her. With her husband she established the Sunday school on the mountain, holding the sessions in her home.
Whenever a Christian duty was presented, this noble woman responded and gave all her time and strength.
