Cloyd, Madison
Cloyd, Madison age 77, died at a local hospital yesterday morning at 6 o'clock after a lingering illness. He was born in White County, Tenn., and lived most of his life there. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Josie Ramsey, of East Lake, and Mrs. Mary Bohannan, Drossett, Tenn., and a brother, Brock Cloyd, of Atlanta. Mr. Cloyd was a member other Christian Church at Sparta. The body was moved to Wann¹s where the funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. E. S. Hoover officiating. Interment will be in White Oak cemetery.

Coffey, William
Coffey, William M. "Bill" died peacefully on Tuesday, June 26, 2007. He led a gentle and loving life and will be missed and remembered by his family and many friends. William Milton Coffey was born August 15, 1924 on Lookout Mountain, Tenn., to Charles Shelby and Margaret Anderson Coffey. He loved and honored his wife of 52 years, Ruth Ann Pojman Coffey. He is also survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael A. Coffey and Becki Larrinaga, William M. and Sandra A. Coffey and Timothy P. Coffey and Page Oliver; three grandchildren, Lucas A. Coffey, Austin Graham and Reese Dulaney Coffey. His daughter, Cynthia Ann Coffey preceded him in April. Bill leaves behind siblings, Margaret Rawlings of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., the Reverend Jonathan B. Coffey of Palm City, Fl., and Robert Lewis Coffey of Powder Springs, Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews. Bill attended Baylor Military School in Chattanooga, served as a captain in the U.S. Army in WW II, graduated from the University of Tennessee Law School in Knoxville before moving to Washington D.C. to work for AAA. He became the General Manager of the AAA Texas Division, building it into one of the largest and most successful in the company. After retiring from AAA, he ran several businesses including Westlake Florist and Rowan Oak B&B. He had a loving personality, warm smile, great sense of humor and acceptance of all people with warmth and charm. The perfect southern gentleman was an often-apt description. He was a retired Rotarian and served as deacon in several Presbyterian churches. He loved to play bridge and travel and was happiest when surrounded by his family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30th at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive, Austin followed by a reception. Contributions celebrating his life may be made to the church, the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Chemist Helped Develop Buffering Agent In Bufferin
posted March 6, 2005 Charles Storey Colburn Jr., 86, of Lookout Mountain, Tn., died Saturday, March 5, 2005.He was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Chattanooga to Charles Storey Colburn and Ida Callaway Colburn. He attended Chattanooga schools and was graduated from the University of Chattanooga, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He also earned a Master of Science in chemistry from UT-Knoxville. During World War II, he worked at Tennessee-Eastman of Kingsport as a development scientist. In 1983, Mr. Colburn retired as engineer and technical director from Chattem, where he was employed for 38 years. He helped develop the buffering agent in Bufferin, and he worked on many other patent processes developed by Chattem. He taught as an adjunct instructor of chemistry for 20 years at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He earned a membership in Gamma Sigma Epsilon (honorary chemical fraternity). He was a member of the American Chemical Society (Chemist of the Year, 1980), The Torch Club of Chattanooga, the U.S. Power Squadron (secretary, education officer, lieutenant commander, Frank W. Jarnagin Memorial Award winner), the Chattanooga Music Club and the U.S.-China Friendship Association. For many years he lent his tenor voice to the choir of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain. He later attended Christ Church, Episcopal. An enthusiastic traveler, he visited all continents except Antarctica, logging nearly 700,000 airline miles. A gifted raconteur, his hobbies included photography, astronomy, celestial navigation, writing, music, reading and gourmet cooking He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Garvin McMillin Colburn; three daughters, Ariel Florence Colburn of Nashville, Ida Cecilia Colburn of Lookout Mountain, and Rosemary Douglass Colburn Milburn and son-in-law, Jim Milburn, of Lookout Mountain; grandchildren, James Charles Milburn of Wilmington, N.C., and Marian Grace Milburn of Lookout Mountain, Tn., and sister-in-law, Marcia McMillin of Chattanooga. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Episcopal, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Visitation is at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church, Episcopal, 663 Douglas St., the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, or to a favorite charity. Coleman, Emma, aged 50, wife of J. C. Coleman, died at the family home 3612 Avenue N, at an early hour yesterday. Funeral services will be held from the Riverside Baptist church this morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. Dan Quinn will be the officiating minister. Interment will follow in Sively cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers; Arthur Meadows, T. ?. Fine, A. D. Bass, D. Street, S. D. Hodges and Claude Guthrie. Conner, Catherine
Conner, Catherine Gillespie, widow of Samuel Haney Conner, died yesterday at her home on Bird's Mill Road (now Brainerd Road) east of Missionary Ridge. On June 25, would have been 70. In feeble health for some time. A member of one of Hamilton County's most prominent families, a sister to the late William Gillespie and Kate Steele; also Robert and Johnnie Gillespie of Hamilton County, and James Gillespie of Arkansas. She leaves six children, Mrs. Mamie Salliard, William Conner, Miss Sallie Conner, Mrs. Purnell Smith, Miss Belle Conner and Thomas Conner, all respected citizens of this county. Samuel Conner, her husband, was uncle and relative for whom Sheriff Sam A. Conner was named. His tragic death is still remembered by his many friends. On May 22, 1886, he was called to bedside of a relative at home of Robert Gillespie. A severe storm came on, and before he could tie his horse and get under shelter, he was struck by lightning and killed instantly. This sad accident left Mrs. Conner with six small children. Her life spent at homeplace in rearing and educating her family. Has lived in the home where she died for fifty-two years, scene of many pleasant occasions. Mrs. Conner's death marks the passing of one of Hamilton County's oldest and most respected ladies. Has been a consistent and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church since girlhood. Funeral at the home 2:00 today with Dr. Moore of Centenary and Dr. Brooks of McFerrin's Chapel. Pallbearers will be nephews. Interment in the old Conner graveyard, now McFerrin's cemetery.

Cooper, George D. DEAD AT AGE 66 Rites today for former employee of Railway Express Agency. George D. Cooper, 66, retired employee of the Railway Express Agency died Tuesday morning, in a Chattanooga hospital. He worked for the agency for 32 years before his retirement in 1957. Mr. Cooper attended the Methodist church. Among his survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Douglas Brooks of Chattanooga; three sons, Thomas F.. Cooper, Chattanooga; Richard T. Cooper of Memphis; and Col. Cox, Dora Tims, 88, of 106 Daisy Ave., Daisy, Tenn., died Sunday evening in a local hospital. Mrs. Cox, the widow of Oscar N. Cox, was preceded in death by her parents, Fate and Molly Brotherton Tims. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Daisy. Survivors include two sons, Virgil F. Cox, Red Bank, and Charles E. Cox, Daisy; daughter, Mrs. Lesal (Grace) Beene, Daisy, with whom she made her home; two sisters, Mrs. Georgia T. Lewis, Red Bank and Mrs. Todd Logan, San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Services will be held today at 1 p.m. from the chapel of the funeral home with the Revs. Bob Dominy Jr. and E. Lee Griss officiating. Burial will be Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Bruce Cox, Edward Owens, Lloyd Beene, Ernie Lewis, Dr. Donald E. Cox and Dr. Eddie Owens serving as pallbearers. Cox, Earsie Bremlow 85, Cox Lane, Daisy, Tenn., died in a Chattanooga convalescent home Friday afternoon after a lingering illness. She was a member of the Daisy First Baptist Church, a lifelong resident of North Hamilton County and widow of W. J. Cox. Survivors, four sons, E. Raymond Co., Knoxville; J. Hassel Cox and Charles J. Cox, both of Chattanooga, Elmer Cox, Daisy, one daughter, Mrs. Iva Roberts, Soddy; three grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will e held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the chapel of the funeral home by the Rev. Ed Briggs and the Rev. J. A. Akins. Interment will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be nephews, Charles, Bruce, Edward and Ray Cox, Nelson Brown, Otis Brumlow. The body will remain at the funeral home. Cox, Elmer 68 of Soddy-Daisy died Monday in a local hospital. He was a member of Soddy-Daisy First Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran, a Tennessee state trooper for many years and a barber and farmer in Soddy-Daisy for many years. Survivors include his wife, Annie Layne Cox, daughter, Anna Suee Correll, son Everett Cox, both of Soddy-Daisy, brother Charles Cox, Red Bank, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Ed Blanchard officating. Burial will be in National Cemetery. Cox, Elmer
Cox, Elmer Everett 74, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in an area hospital. Cox served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Edisto, where he traveled to Antarctica on one of the Navy's first voyages there. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree in education and received his master's degree from George Peabody College in Nashville. He retired from the Hamilton Department of Education after 34 years of service as a well-known teacher, principal and educator. During his tenure with the Department of Education, he was principal at Daisy Elementary School, Soddy-Daisy Junior High School, Tiftonia Junior High School and Harrison Bay Vocational School. He was a member of the Saddle Pals Riding Club and Golden Spurs Trail Riders and was an avid horseman and farmer. He loved working on his farms in Hamilton and Sequatchie counties, where he raised horses, cows and other farm animals. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Elmer and Annie Layne Cox. Survivors include his son, Barton Everett Cox of Stokesdale, N.C.; daughters, LeeAnn Williamson of Chattanooga, Millie Clayton of Lebanon, Tenn.; sister, Anna Sue Correll of Soddy-Daisy; and grandchildren, Cade Williamson of Soddy-Daisy, Paul Cox of Madison, N.C.; and Justice and Rowdy McFall of Lebanon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Rev Johnny Talley officiating. Interment will be scheduled later in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bible Baptist Church at P.O. Cox, Eva G., 90, of Daisy, Tenn., died in the Rhea County Hospital early Monday morning. She was the oldest member of the Daisy First Baptist Church, widow of John T. Cox, the daughter of the late Scott and Elizabeth Gooden, pioneer settlers of North Hamilton County. Survivors, two sons, R. E. Cox, Dayton, Tenn.; Bruce Cox, Red Bank, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Shannon, Birmingham, Ala.; Mrs. Blanche Cannon, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one brother, Albert Gooden, Pikeville, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the chapel of the funeral home by the Rev. Edward Briggs, pastor of the Daisy First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Poe Cemetery. Cox, James
Cox, James Hassel, of Rossville, died Thursday in a local hospital. Owner and operator of Cox Coal and Supply Company on Main Street for 25 years, he was also a builder and cattle farmer and had been a coal miner and banker. A native of Daisy, Tenn., he was a graduate of Daisy High School where he played basketball. He attended the University of Chattanooga and studied law and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church. He was the brother of the late Raymond Cox. Survivors include his wife, Irene Akins Cox, two brothers, Elmer Cox, Soddy Daisy, Charles J. Cox, Red Bank; nephew, Everett Cox, niece Sue Correll, both of Daisy. Arrangements will be announced by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Cox, R. E., 72, of Dayton, Tenn., died in a Chattanooga hospital Tuesday afternoon. He was a retired agent for the Southern Railway, a member of the Dayton Masonic Lodge No. 512 F&AM, Dayton Eastern Star, the Dayton Rotary Club and a member of the Dayton Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Rhea McCuiston Cox, Dayton; three sons, C. M. Cox, Soddy; B. M. Cox, Danville, Va.; J. R. Cox, Gadsden, Ala.; one brother, W. Bruce Cox, Red Bank, Tenn., two sisters, Mrs. Sam Shannon, Birmingham, Ala.; Mrs. C. Cannon, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren. The body will remain at the funeral home. Crabb, John GOOD VETERAN DROPS DEAD at LAKE CREEK, GEORGIA.
Crabb, John W. one of the most highly esteemed citizens of this section, met with a sudden death Monday morning, June 3, 1918. He had been hoeing cotton in the early morning and came to the house to write a letter to his daughter in Chattanooga, Tn. He went away whistling to mail it and had gone but a few minutes when his wife had a premonition that something was wrong and went to look for him, finding his lifeless body about three hundred yards away. Mr. Crabb was seventy-three years of age, and was a brave Confederate veteran - a member of Co. A, 1st Ga. Cavalry, CSA, - and a good member of the Baptist church. The soul of honor in his dealings with his fellow men, he had the esteem of all who knew him. In his young manhood, Mr. Crabb was united in marriage with Miss Lizzie May, who has much sympathy in her loss. Five children survive him - Messrs. Wesley and Gus Crabb of Jacksonville, Fla., Mr. Jesse Crabb of Shawnee, Okla., and Mesdames Chas. Morgan and Brown Hamill of Chattanooga, Tn.; and two brothers - Messrs. Thomas Jackson Crabb of Rockmart, Georgia, and Cliff Crabb of Dublin, Georgia. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Samuel Jackson Crabb, and Sarah Ann Malvina (White) Crabb, both late of Cedartown, Georgia. Funeral services were conducted yesterday at Oak Grove Baptist Church near Cedartown, Georgia, by Rev. L. E. Greer, assisted by Revs. H. H. Popham and R. W. Hamrick and were largely attended.

Crawley, William A.
Funeral services over the body of William A. Crawley, one of Sale Creek’s oldest and most respected residents, who died Saturday morning at his home, was held from the Christian Church Monday afternoon at 1, with Reverend J. D. Gunn, of Sparta, officiating.
W. H. Manning, G. A. Shipley, Professor J. H. Kenney, William Fleming, Dr. A. W. Gross and Professor S. H. Profftt acted as pallbearers.
Mr. Crawley had lived in Sale Creek all his life. For several years he engaged in the mercantile business.
Surviving him are his wife, five sons, Walter, of Soddy; M. C. of Sale Creek; James F., of Camp Pike, and Billie and Bruce, of Sale Creek, and four daughters, Mrs. Garrett Walker, of Chattanooga; Miss Pearl, who teaches in the Soddy school; Mrs. Claude May, of Soddy, and Ola, the baby girl, at home. He also leaves two brothers, John O. and James M. Crawley of Sale Creek, and four sisters, Mrs. B. W. Shipley, of Rockwood; Mrs. T. D. Shelton, of Sale Creek; Mrs. P. Bolton, fo Graysville, and Mrs. T. D. Ganaway, of Washington , D. C.

Crimmins, Josephine The deep devotion of Miss Josephine Crimmins to her church, her family and her friends was feelingly discussed at her funeral services yesterday morning at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic church, which were attended by a large number of friends. Monsignor Francis T. Sullivan, pastor, was in charge of the services. Requiem high mass was sung and there were many floral tributes in appreciation of the life of Miss Crimmins, one of Chattanooga's best-known businesswomen, who lived her entire life in the city. Interment was in the family plot at Mount Olivet cemetery. O'Donohue's was in charge of the arrangements.

Cross, Jennie, aged pioneer resident, died yesterday at home of niece (Miss Laura Cross Flanagan) at 22 Alta Vista Drive, east of Missionary Ridge. Funeral at residence today, 2:00. Rev. Williams, pastor Brainerd Methodist Episcopal Church, South will officiate, assisted by Rev. T. J. Haldeman of Christ Episcopal Church. Burial Brainerd Cemetery. Miss Cross, native of Albany, KY, born 1844, lived in Chattanooga seventy years. She was a teacher in the first public schools in Chattanooga. She reared her niece and nephew, Robert Cross Flanagan, now of St. Paul, MN. Several other nieces and nephews in distant cities survive her.
