Be it remembered that this cause came on to be heard before Chancellor T. M. McConnel on this 1 day of May 1895 upon the pleadings exhibits and proof in the course from all of which it appears that complainant S. H. Schrudder as the administrator of the estate of Harmon Schrudder deceased sold and conveyed to complainant Mrs. Maude H. Fox subject to the ratification and confirmation of the Chancery Court of Hamilton County Tennessee for the price of $175.00 the following described real estate on Walden's Ridge in the (?)16th Civil District  of Hamilton County Tennessee described as

than it would bring if sold by the Master _ __ _ _ _ _  a decree of sale for the purpose of paying the debts of the estate of the said Harmon Schrudder and that it is to the best interest of the minor defendants as well as the other heirs of the said Harmon Schrudder deceased that said sale be ratified and confirmed by the court.   It is ordered and decreed that said sale of the said described lot or parcel of ground by the Administrator, S. Hamilton County Marriages

Early Hamilton County Marriages

All marriage records of Hamilton County prior to 1857 were lost to fire or the Civil War. The marriages included in this list were compiled from early newspapers, Chancery Court records, family Bibles and other authentic sources.

The first marriage performed in Hamilton County, for which any record exists, was that of Daniel Ross and Mollie McDonald in 1786. Miss McDonald was the daughter of Captain John McDonald and Anna Shorey McDonald.

The next recorded marriage took place at the Mission on the Chickamauga, in the Cherokee Nation on March 22, 1818. Letters and Conversations of the Cherokee Mission, published in Boston in 1830, mentions the marriage of Rev. William Chamberlain, one of the missionaries, to Flora Hoyt. The marriage took place in the Mission Church in the Cherokee Nation and was witnessed by the missionaries and church members. Miss Hoyt was the daughter of Rev. Ard Hoyt.

A Barefoot Bride Elopes:  Chattanooga, Tenn., May 22, 1887
Nixon-Vangegriff Marriage
James Vangegriff and Miss Nellie Nixon were raised in the northern portion of this county, and their childhood friendship ripened into love when they grew older. Several months ago, when they expressed a desire to wed, Miss Nixon's parents refused to give their consent. The couple then decided to elope, but the watchful eye of the girl's father and brother always prevented.
Last night Miss Nixon slipped out of her room and joined her lover, and they fled to the residence of a minister. While he was in the midst of the ceremony, the brother of the girl, who had discovered her flight, rushed in and stopped the marriage. The couple rushed out into the darkness and eluded the angry brother. Miss Nixon had lost her shoes in some way, but she walked with her lover a distance of eleven miles barefooted, and reached Chattanooga at 3 a.m. A minister was found and married the couple a minute before the pursuing brother came up.

Patten - Manker   Monday, October 6, 1890
John A. Patten United in Wedlock to Mrs. Edith Manker
The following from the Chattanooga Times Friday morning is a little late but will be read with interest by a good many East Tennessee people.
If 1,000 is the seating capacity of the First M. E. Church, there must have been at least 1,200 of the elite of the city in the auditorium last evening, to witness the marriage of John A. Patten and Miss Edith Manker.
The church was beautifully decorated with wreaths of the ever-pleasing Golden rod, which also hung in clusters around the chancel rail and from the chandeliers of the interior.   Inside the chancel rail was a large pyramid of fragrant flowers, in the center of which a large second crop magnolia reposed as though reminding one of what might be if the season were earlier.
At 7 o'clock, Mendelsohn's wedding march announced that the bridal party was approaching.  Little Edith Moore, dressed in pure white, proceeded as flower girl and unfastened the ribbons which had been placed across the aisle immediately in front of the chancel. Then followed the attendants as follows:  Messrs. Sam W. Lawton, best man P. A. Wilson, John Manker, Guy Beatty and John Axley of this city, Misses Margret Patten, maid of honor, Blanche Mann, Kate Moore, Nellie Gregg and Jennie Patten.  The maid of honor was dressed in white silk and the lady attendants in white Swiss.
The attendants were arranged neatly on either side of the chancel, and the beautiful bride, beautifully arrayed in white silk and veil, entered from the left aisle leasing on the arm of her brother, Myron W. Manker, and joined the groom at the chancel.
The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. T. C. Warner, D. D., and Rev. J. J. Manker, the bride's father. Dr. Warner read the opening service, after which Dr. Manker propounded the questions of betrothal to the bride and groom, who then repeated the pledge of love.  Dr. Warner lead in a fervent prayer, the ring was adjusted, and in a most touching manner the bride's father pronounced the happy young couple man and wife, blessing them as they knelt at the altar.  Both pastors then united repeated the Lord's prayer, the Lohegrin Bridal Chorus was sounded from the massive organ, and the bridal party turned from the church.
Mr. and Mrs. Patten left over the Cincinnati South Road, at 8 o'clock, to visit friends in Cincinnati, Delavan, Chicago and other points.  In about three weeks they will be 'at home' to friends, corner Fourth and Chestnut Streets.
Both contracting parties are too well known here to need introduction, the bride being the daughter of Rev. J. J. Manker, and the groom the secretary of the Chattanooga Medical Company.
Special praise regarding last night's ceremony should doubtless be given the ushers for the graceful manner in which they handled the large audience.  The ushers were Mr. Long, Paul Manker, James Trimble, Robert Davidson, Ben Rawlings, Frank Vinson, P. M. Simpson and Mr. Crepp.
