MY RESEARCH ON THE HOWARD LINE ALONG WITH INFORMATION FROM OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS HAS BEEN ON GOING NOW FOR OVER 20 YRS.  MRS JOYCE ELLIS OF S.C.,  MRS CAROL SIECK OF EDENTON, N.C., DR GRACE BATSON OF NAPLES, FLA. 1727 SPOTSYLVANIA ALEXANDER HOWARD IS NAMED OVERSEER OF A MAIN ROAD.

COUNTY RECORDS IN 1727 LIST THE MARRIAGE OF ALEXANDER HOWARD TO JOANNA TRIPPLES.  TRIPPLES/TRIPPLET/TRIPOLI HAVE ALSO BEEN USED AS THE SPELLING FOR JOANNA'S NAME.  THE CORRECT SPELLING IS PROBABLY TRIPPLET

AMELIA COUNTY, VA.  JULY 15, 1742 DEED FOR 196 ACRES OF LAND FROM JAMES MUNFORD OF COUNTY OF PRINCE GEORGE, VA. TO ALEXANDER HOWARD OF THE AFORESAID.  ONE TRACT OF LAND ON SWEET HOUSE CREEK IN AMELIA CO. BEING THE LAND THE SD. MUNFORD BOUGHT OF ROBT. DAVIS. FOR DAMAGES BY REASON OF NOT PERFORMING A CERTAIN COVENANT IN HIS LIFETIME WITH THE SAID JOANNA HOWARD.  THE EXTX WAS ORDER TO PAY FOR JOANNA'S COST FOR COURT AND WHATEVER THE SUIT IS FOR.  (THIS WAS PROBABLY FOR SAID DEALING WITH JOANNA'S HUSBAND'S ESTATE AND THAT OF ALEXANDER'S FATHER'S.)

II.      Peter Howard, b. CIRCA 1730.  He married Ann Portman.  Peter died CIRCA 1800/1810, GREENVILLE DISTRICT, S.C.  WAYNE COUNTY, KY PER MAX BROWN MBROWN99 AUG 1, 1998 PETER SHOWS UP ON THE

           1820 CENSUS AS MALE 45 PLUS ONE FEMALE 16-26 AND ONE FEMALE 45 PLUS.

           PORTMAN HIS SON ALSO SHOWS UP ON THIS CENSUS.

           GRANVILLE CO., N.C.  2 NOVEMER 1767  PETER HOWARD AND HIS WIFE, ANN HOWARD SELL THE LAND THAT PETER INHERITED FROM HIS BROTHER ALEXANDER.  DEDD TO JOHN POWNALL OF BUTTE CO., N.C. WAS MADE BY PETER AND ANN HOWARD WHO WERE THEN LIVING IN ROWAN CUNTY,  N. C.  (NOW MOST LIKELY LINCOLN CO., N.C.).

           A.      Thomas Howard, b. FEB 25, 1760.  He married Mary (Polly) Gosnell, C 1785, in GREENVILLE DISTR., S.C., d. AFTER 1840, GREENVILLE, S.C., buried: HOWARD FAMILY CEMETERY.  Thomas died FEB 24, 1838, GREENVILLE CO., S.C., buried: HOWARD FAMILY CEMETERY.  ACCORDING TO FAMILY LEGEND THOMAS HOWARD HAD CURLY RED HAIR.

                     HE AND MARY GOSNELL HOWARD RAISED NINE CHILDREN IN GREENVILLE DISTRICT,

                     THE HISTORY OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. BY JAMES M. RICHARDSON  STATES THAT

                     CAMERON AND HIS TORY FRIENDS HAD POISONED THE MINDS OF THE INDIANS AGAINST

                     THE WHIGS AND IN JULY 0F 1776, THE INDIANS ATTACKED.   IN THE INDIAN MASSACRE

                     "CAPT THOMAS HOWARD, WHO RESIDED WITHIN THE INDIAN COUNTRY, A FEW MILES NORTWEST OF THE PRESENT GOWENSVILLE SETTLEMENT, WAS ABLE TO ORGANIZE A

                     SMALL COMPANY OF MEN FROM AMONG THE NUMBER, WHO LIKE HIMSELF, HAD TAKEN REFUGE IN THE OLD BLOCK HOUSE"   CAPT HOWARD AND HIS MEN ATTACKED AND KILLED MANY OF THE INDIANS.  THE INDIANS REORGANIZED AND FOUGHT BACK.  THIS

                     SKIRMISH IS NOW KNOW AS  " THE BATTLE OF ROUND MOUNTIAN".    CAPT HOWARD AND HIS INDIAN GUIDE, SCHUYUKA  LED THE SMALL GROUP THROUGH THE PASS NOW KNOW AS "HOWARD'S GAP"  TO WIN THE SKIRMISH.  SCHUYUKA LATER DIED A HORRIBLE DEATH AT THE HANDS OF HIS INDIAN FOES.

                     THE SPARTANBURG HERALD-JOURNAL ON JUNE 7, 1931 RAN THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE BY NITA TURNER REGARDING THOMAS HOWARD AND HIS INDIAN FIREND, SKYUKA.

                     "HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH AN IDIAN NAMED SKYUKA IS A LEGEND IN ITSELF.  THE STORY HAS BEEN HANDED DOWN IN THE FAMILY THAT THOMAS HOWARD WAS HUNTING WILD TURKEYS IN THE WOODS NEAR HIS HOME.  HE MET AN INDIAN, AND UNAFRAID, WENT UP TO HIM.  THE INDIAN HAD SHOT SOME TURKEYS AND AFTER SOME SIGNING BACK AND FORTH, HOWARD FOUND THAT THE INDIAN HAD BEEN BITTEN BY A SNAKE.  HOWARD TOOK ONE OF THE TURKEYS AND BOUND IT AROUND THE IDNIAN'S ARM TO DRAW OUT THE POISON.  HE THEN MOTIONED FOR THE INDIAN TO FOLLOW HIM TO HIS HOME.  HE SAID "COME SUP WITH ME ; MY HOME IS NEARBY.  THOU ART IN DANGER OF BLOOD POISONING.  THERE WE CAN BIND THE ARM."   SKYUKA ACCEPTED HOWARD'S INVITATION AND THUS A GREAT FRIENDSHIP WAS BORN."

                     THOMAS HOWARD SERVED AS A PRIVATE IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA MITILIA UNDER COL BENJAMIN ROEBUCK FROM MAY 1780  AFTER CHARLES TOWN WAS DEFEATED UNTIL 1782 WHEN ANDERSON RETURNED.

                     A MONUMENT ERECTED TO HONOR THOMAS HOWARD ON BLUE RIDGE MTN IN 1909 STATED "ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE BATTLE OF  ROUND MOUNTIAN IN WHICH CAPT HOWARD AND HIS BRAVE FOLLOWERS WITH THE FAITHFUL INIDAN GUIDE SKYUKA DEFEATED THE CHEROKEE NATION 1776"  THIS MONUMENT WAS LATER MOVED TO HOWARD'S GAP ROAD AND RE-ERECTED 1967.

                    

                     IN 1810 THOMAS AND MARY HOWARD BOUGHT 100 ACRES ON BARTON'S FORK OF S

                     TYGER RIVER.  THOMAS HOWARD BUILT A SMALL LOG CABIN ABOUT 30 FT SQUARE.

                     HWY 11 WAS REROUTED AND IT TRAVELED DIRECTLY ACROSS THE OLD HOME PLACE.

                     THE HOWARD CEMETERY IS STILL BESIDE HWY 11.

                     THE UPPER PART OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA  BY MANN BATSON

                     ON PAGE 411 SAYS THAT AT A UNION PARTY MEETING ON FEBRUARY 2, 1833 MAJOR ROBERT P. GOODLETTE APPOINTED SECRETARY NAMED ELEVEN GENTLEMEN TO A COMMITTEE "TO PREPARE AND REPORT A PREAMBLE AND RESOLUTIONS EXPRESIVE OF THE SENSE OF THE MEETING"  THOMAS HOWARD (A REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER) WAS ONE OF THE ELEVEN MEN APPOINTED.

                     THOPMAS HOWARD IS BURIED IN THE FAMILY CEMETERY AND A MARKER WAS PLACED ON HIS GRAVE BY THE NATHANIEL GREENE CHAPTER DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. IN 1964.

                               THE PETITION OF THE ABOVE NAMED PETITIONERS WOULD RESPECTFULLY SHOW UNTO YOUR WORSHIP AS FOLLOWS:

                               I.     THAT ON THE _ , DAY OF  A D 1864 PORTMAN HOWARD SR DIED, LEAVING IN FULL FORCE AND VIRTUE HIS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT BY WHICH HE APPOINTED HIS WIFE ELIZABETH HOWARD HIS EXECUTRIX.

                               II.   THAT THE SAID ELIZABETH HOWARD QUALIFIED AS EXECUTRIX THEREOF AND ENJOYED THE ESTATE. (WHICH BY THE TERMS OF THE WILL WAS HERS DURING HER NATURAL LIFE, AND AFTER HER DEATH TO BE SOLD AND EQUALLY DIVIDED AMOUNGST ALL HIS CHILDREN) UNTIL HER DEATH WHICH OCCURED SOMETIME IN THE YEAR 187-.

                               III.  THAT ON THE 19TH DAY OF FEBRUARY 1876 THE DEFENDANT CHARLES HOWARD FILED HIS PETITION IN THIS COURT FOR LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION DE BONIS NOW.  CAME TESTAMENTS ANNEXO , UPON THE ESTATE OF THE SAID PORTMAN HOWARD SR, AND ON THE 6TH DAY OF MARCH A D 1876 YOUR HONEOR GRANTED HIM SAID LETTERS.

                               IV.  THAT THE SAID CHARLES HOWARD THEREAFOR PROFESED HIMSELF AS SUCH ADMINISTRATOR OF THE SAID ESTATE, AND PROCEEDED TO ADMINISTER THE SAME

                               BUT HAS FAILED TO MAKE A FINAL SETTLEMENT OF THE SAME, ALTHOUGH REQUESTED SO TO DO:  THAT IN THE OPINION OF YOUR PETITIONER HE HAS HAD AN ABUNDANCE OF TIME TO COLLECT DEBTS OWING THE ESTATE, AND MAKE HIS FINAL SETTLEMENT.

                               V.   YOUR PETITION FURTHER REPRESENTS TO YOU HONOR, THAT THE FOLLOWING ARE LEGATEES AND DISTRIBUTES OF THE ESTATE TO WIT, THOMAS HOWARD, WHO LIVES IN TENN.JOHN HOWARD WHO LIVES IN MISSOURI SPACIA WARD, AND MARY HOWARD WHO LIVE IN N.C. GEORGE HOWARD, WILLIAM HOWARD, JULIA PITTMAN, DAVID HOWARD, ALEXL HOWARD, LOUISA HOWARD, GEORGE H HOWARD, WADE HOWARD AND SHADRACH HOWARD WHO LIVES IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY.

                               WHEREFORE YOUR PETITIONER PRAYS THAT YOUR HONOR WILL CAUSE YOUR CITATION TO ISSUE DIRECTED TO THE PARTIES IN INTEREST, TO SHEW CAUSE BEFORE YOU AN A DAY TO BE THEREIN FIXED BY YOU, WHY A FINAL SETTLEMENT OF SIAD ESTATE SHOULD NOT BE HAD.

L. 82 Chattanooga died there in a hospital later Wednesday.  He was a retired minister of the Church of God, one of the original 70 elders of the Church of God.  He was the son of the late Moses S. and Mary Jane Corvin Turner of Rhea County.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs Mary Voiles Turner, Chattanooga; two sons L. L. Turner of D-- and Ray Turner of Hixson, Tenn.

                                                               Obituary  Turner, Mrs Mary Voiles 78 of 300 Sylvan St North Chattanooga died in a local hospital Friday afternoon.  A native of Rhea County she had been a resident of Chattanooga for the past 50 years.  Mrs Turner had been a member of the North Chattanooga Church of God for many years.  Her survivors include three sons, W. T., C. O. and Frank Voiles, all of Chattanooga; four daughters, Mrs. T. R. Smith, Mrs James Benton, Mrs Erma Johnson, and Mrs Joe Workman, all of Chattanooga; one sister, Mrs. A. M. Bell, Birmingham, Ala.;  13 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren also survive.  Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock at the North Chattanooga Church of God with the Rev M. E. Roberson Rev Gordon Stallings officiating.  Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.  Arrangments by the Turner Funeral Home.

L. 82 Chattanooga died there in a hospital later Wednesday.  He was a retired minister of the Church of God, one of the original 70 elders of the Church of God.  He was the son of the late Moses S. and Mary Jane Corvin Turner of Rhea County.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs Mary Voiles Turner, Chattanooga; two sons L. L. Turner of D-- and Ray Turner of Hixson, Tenn.

                                                               one daughter, Mrs Thelma Brooks of Dayton, Tenn; five stepsons, Ollie Howard, Charles Voiles, Billy Voiles all of Chattanooga, Carl Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz and Bill Hughes of Akron, Ohio.    Three step daughters, Erma Johnson and Roma Smith both of Chattanooga,  mrs Gladys S

                     TENTH:  IT IS MY ABSOLUTE WILL AND DESIRE THAT MY ESTATE SHALL BE DIVIDED INTO ELEVEN EQUAL PARTS INCLUDING WHAT I HAVE GIVEN OFF PREVIOUS TO THE MAKING OF THIS WILL AS SO MUCH CASH ALREADY RECEIVED WITHOUT INTEREST.  THE ONE ELEVENTH PART OF MY ESTATE I SET APART AS AN INDIVIDUAL PORTION TO BE MANAGED AS I SHALL HEREIN DIRECT.  AND I WISH IT DISTINCTLY UNDERSTOOD THAT THE LAND GIVEN TO JOHN M. HOWARD AND P.E.A. HOWARD AT THE DEATH OF MY WIFE POLLY HOWARD IS NOT TO BE TAKEN INTO THE DIVISION OF MY ESTATE EXCEPT THE ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS CHARGED TO JOHN M HOWARD THE AVIS HOWARD PLACE, NEITHER IS THE BOOKCASE, DESK, LIBRARY, NOR BIBLE TO BE TAKEN IN THE DIVISION.

                     ELEVENTH:  IT IS MY ABSOLUTE WILL AND DESIRE THAT THE ONE ELEVENTH PART OF MY WILL SET APART IN THE TENTH CLAUSE FOR HARRIET BALDWIN SHALL GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE LEGAL HEIRS GEING OF HER BODY AND TO BE PUT OUT AS INTEREST BY MY EXECUTORS, AND MANAGED BY THEM UNTIL THEY RESPECTIVELY MARRY OR COME TO THE AGE OF TWENTY-ONE YEARS.

                     TWELFTH:  IT IS MY ABSOLUTE WILL AND DESIRE THAT THE NOTES I HAVE TAKEN UP, AND HOLD ON MY SON MOSES HOWARD AMOUNTING TO ABOUT EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS SHALL BE CONSIDERED THAT AMOUNT OF CASH ALREADY RECEIVED AND IF AFTER  BRINGING ALL THE OTHER LEGATEES UP EGUAL WITH HIM AND THERE SHOULD BE ANY MORE COMING TO HIM, THEN AGAIN IT IS MY ABSOLUTE WILL AND DESIRE THAT MY EXECUTORS PAY IT OVER TO HIM AT DIFFERENT TIMES  AS THEY MAY DEEM IT NECESSARY TO SUPPLY HIS IMMEDIATE WANTS.

                     THIRTEENTH:  IT IS MY ABSOLUTE WILL AND DESIRE THAT SHOULD ANY CONTROVERSY ARISE IN THE SETTLEMENT OF MY ESTATE, IT SHALL BE DECIDED BY THREE RESPECTABLE MEN WHO ARE FREEHOLDERS OF GOOD PROPERTY, WHOM THEY SHALL CALL TO THEIR ASSISTANCE, AND THEIR DECISION, OF A MAJORITY OF THEM SHALL BE FINAL AND CONCLUSIVE  ON THE SUBJECT, BETWEEN THE PARTIES, AND SHOULD EITHER OF MY LEGATEES REFUSE TO ABIDE BY SUCH DECISION OR AWARD AND APPEAL TO LAW ON THE SUJECT IN CONROVERSY:   HE, SHE, OR THEY SHALL FORFEIT ALL THEIR INTEREST IN MY ESTATE EXCEPT FIVE DOLLARS TO BE PAID THEM BY MY EXECUTORS, AND THE PORTION SO FORFEITED TO BE EQUALLY DIVIDED BETWEEN THOSE OF MY CHILDREN WHO AGREES TO ABIDE BY THE WILL.

                     FOURTEENTH:  I DO HEREBY APPOINT JOHN M. HOWARD AND P. E. A. HOWARD EXECUTORS OF THIS, MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, HEREBY REVOKING ALL OTHER FORMER WILLS BY ME MADE.

                     MARY ANN GOLDSMITH WAS THE DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM GOLDSMITH, A PRIVATE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.   HE ENLISTED AS A LAD OF SEVENTEEN YEARS AND SERVED UNDER GENERALS GATES, MORGAN AND GREEN IN NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA.  HE WAS BORN ABOUT 1762 IN OR NEAR RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.  WILLIAM WAS THE SON OF REV. RICHARD GOLDSMITH, RICHARD THE SON OF SAMUEL GOLDSMITH,  A CAPTAIN IN THE BRITISH MILITIA IN THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WARS.
