Leffew4,5,6 Abt. 1896 in Meigs Co., Tennessee, daughter of Joseph Leffew and Sallie Thompson. She was born February 09, 1883 in Meigs Co.,TN, and died Bet. 1913 - 1920 in tennessee.

Notes for Thomas Erby:

The 1880 Bradley County, Tennessee census shows that Tom was living with father and mother. The census lists him as being 12 years of age. Tom was the oldest of five sons to Hampton and Elizabeth, they were George Washington, Henry R. , John and Lee.

On or about 1896 he met and married "Gertie" Leffew and they resided in Meigs County, Tennessee.

The 1900 Meigs County, Tennessee census shows that he was living with Gertie and his son Frank and that he was a farmer. The census shows that he was born in Georgia.

Sometimes between 1900 and 1908 he moved his family to Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee. The Chattanooga City directory shows him working as a laborer at J.D. Bragg Co.

The 1900 Meigs County,Tennessee census shows that Gertie was 17 years old and could not read or write. The census shows that she was living with husband Tom and son Frank.

After Tom died of typhoid fever, the Chattanooga City Directory and the 1910 Hamilton county census shows that Gertie moved in with her dad, Joseph Leffew, which had moved from Meigs County to Chattanooga,Tennessee.

The 1910, Hamilton County,Tennessee census shows that she had another son , his name was Joseph and was three years old. The census shows that she had mothered 4 children.

In 1912, Gertie went to work for Chattanooga Knitting Mills as a knitter. She worked there for a couple of years.

In 1913, she met and married Joseph Dillon and is thought to have moved to Nashville,Tennessee leaving both sons to live with their grandfather, Joseph Leffew.

He married Nellie Mae Frazier12,13,14,15 May 26, 1917 in Rossville, Georgia15, daughter of Edward Frazier and Mary Anderson. She was born September 17, 1901 in James Co., Chattanooga, TN, and died May 1972 in Chattanooga, TN.

Notes for Franklin Erby:

Frank was born in Meigs County, Tennessee right before the turn of the century. His father died when he was just 10 years old. He and his mother, Gertie and younger brother, Joseph, were forced to move in with his grandfather, Joseph Leffew.

Frank had very little schooling, so he could barely read or write, but later on in life he would use his great memory to help him.

When Frank was 14 years old, The Chattanooga City Directory show that he went to work at Chattanooga Knitting Mills in East Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1917 and worked there until 1927. It was there that he met Nellie Mae Frazier and married her. They eloped to Rossville, Georgia and were married.

Frank and Nellie's early married life were very tragic. There first son, John Henry, died at birth. Their first daughter died at seven months of age from Tomain poisoning, but Frank and Nellie went on to have six more children, three boys and three girls.

Frank was a truck driver for most of the places he worked and was known as a hard worker with a lots of friends The 1927 Chattanooga City Directory shows that he went to work at BOYCE MANUFACTURING COMPANY as a truck driver. In 1935 he went to work for Orange Crush as a truck driver and worked there until 1935. His friends called him "DAD" Erby.

On October 9, 1938 at 1:30 AM, Frank was killed by a train at the Boydston Station in East Chattanooga. The accident injured his brain and his arm was severed from his body. The Chattanooga Times Newspaper carried the story on the front page.

The Chattanooga Times shows that Frank was working at WHO Geren Grocery as a driver and clerk when he was killed. It was never answered as to why he was there at that time of night.

Frank and Nellie lived with Nellie's parents, James and Mary Frazier most of the time they were married.

Notes for Nellie Mae Frazier:

Nellie was born right as the 1800 century was Coming to and end. She grew up in East Chattanooga,Tennessee.

In 1914 When Nellie was 15 years old the Chattanooga City Directory shows that she went to work at CHATTANOOGA KNITTING MILLS as a knitter. She worked there for 3 years. There she met her future husband Frank Erby. They also lived in the same neighborhood with each other.

The Walker County Marriage licenses show that on May 26, 1917, they eloped to Rossville,Georgia and were married by the local Justice of the Peace D.H. Hixson. The 1920 city directory shows that in 1920 they were residing with Joseph Leffew, Franks grandfather.

Earlier that year, Frank's brother, Joseph, had just gotten a divorce and moved in with them. Nellie and Frank also had her brother, James "Buddy" Frazier, who also lived with them.

When Frank died they had 6 children, with the youngest, James "Jimmy", only six weeks old. Nellie received a settlement from the railroad and bought a house on Curtis Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

After about four years ,World War II was going on. Nellie lost it all and she had to put two of her daughters, Virginia and Betty and two of her sons, Charles and James in the Church of GOD Orphanage. By this time, she had a child by Joseph. Two of the six children did not go to the orphanage, the youngest (by Joseph) David, was to young and the oldest daughter, Mary Ruth "Tootsie", was to old.

The Chattanooga City directory shows that Nellie went to work for the Cavalier Corporation while living with Joseph.

On April 12,1947, Joseph and Nellie were married in Rossville, Georgia. Nellie and Joseph lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee the remainder of their lives, living in many apartments and houses all over town.

Nellie died in a nursing home in Chattanooga,Tennessee in May of 1972. She suffered from diabetes and before she died her leg had to be amputated.

Joseph was 3 years old when his father Tom died. So his mother Gertie moved him and his brother frank in with his grandfather Joseph Leffew in Chattanooga,Tennessee. Joseph was raised by his grandparents, Sallie and Joseph Leffew. This is also verified by the 1910 Hamilton county,Tennessee census.

When Joseph was 15 years old he like everyone else in the family went to work at CHATTANOOGA KNITTING MILLS as a knitter. When Joseph was 20 years old while working at the knitting mill he met Daisy Phillips.

The Walker county,Georgia Marriage licenses show that In May of 1927 Joseph and Daisy went to Rossville,Georgia and were married by the justice of the peace A.L. Ellis. Joseph and daisy lived in the east Chattanooga area.

In 1938 he was separated from Daisy and he resided with brother Frank and future wife Nellie.

In 1941 Joseph went into the army and was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was in the Calvery,

In May of 1947 Joseph married Nellie in Rossville, Georgia by the justice of the peace H.O. Bowman.

Joseph and Nellie lived at the following address according to Chattanooga city directory.

Joseph in all of his life never owned or drove an automobile or truck. He worked mostly in saw mills all of his life. He worked at Blanchards for over ten years and at the Chattanooga Box Factory for over 20 years.

The 1927-1939 Chattanooga City directory shows her and daughter living with Joseph. The 1938-1945 city show that she was divorced and working for Chattanooga Knitting Mill and her daughter was living with her. After 1945 he whereabouts is unknown.
